Chairman of the GFA’s Club Licensing Board, Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh has suggested no Ghanaian player will survive salary cuts amid the coronavirus crisis.
Clubs across the world are finding ways to continue to stay financially sound due to the impact the Covid-19 pandemic is having on the global economy.
The likes of Juventus, Barcelona, and some other top European clubs have implemented salary reduction measures to stay safe.
Some connoisseurs of the game have proposed Ghanaian clubs do same, with this triggering a debate in the media space.
However, former management member of Asante Kotoko, Dr Kwame Baah-Nuakoh believes the practice will be financially injurious to the local based footballers.
He notes that the players receive meager sums from their clubs and asking them to slash salaries by whatever percentage will cripple their finances further.
“Some (clubs) might not even be underpaying the players, however its still not an amount of money players will be comfortable allowing for a 10% or a 20% slash”, he said.
“The salary still remains low compared to even some other African countries, it will be difficult to say Ghanaian players should reduce their salaries just to help their clubs (survive)” he further disclosed.
Dr Kwame Baah Nuakoh is currently serving as the General Manager, Sustainability for the Ghana National Petroleum Company Ltd.
