English second tier side Brentford has opened talks with Ghana’s Tarique Fosu and his teammates over deferring half of their wages until the football season resumes.

The club and squad are yet to agree upon a deal, with clubs across the Football League looking for ways to soften the financial blow of the coronavirus pandemic.

Birmingham became the first Championship club to confirm the move earlier this week, while Leeds’ players, coaching staff and senior management team have all now volunteered to take wage deferrals for the “foreseeable future”.

Clubs are scrambling for clarification on whether or not players fall into the category of employees eligible for government help after the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, announced the state would support companies by paying 80 per cent of wages, up to £2,500 a month.

The PFA are set for “urgent” talks with the Premier League and EFL to clarify how best to move forward.

A statement read: “As with other industries, the current COVID-19 crisis is having a severe impact on the finances of the game. Several clubs have already approached players with a view to imposing pay deferrals.”
