Asante Kotoko have issued a strongly worded statement expressing their disappointment at the behavior of some of their supporters during Sunday’s defeat to Berekum Chelsea.
Some fans at the Baba Yara Stadium began to violently protest by throwing projectiles on the field after Berekum Chelsea took a 1-0 lead.
The irate supporters were furious over decisions of the referee in their match against the visiting team which led to some throwing stones and sachet water directed at the match officials.
Some also tried to force a gate to the pitch open before security officials intervened to halt the action which could have spiraled out of control in the match. Calm was restored and the game continued until the end. However, outside the stadium after the game, the disturbances continued.
In a sad twist of event, one fan was hit by stray ‘rubber’ bullets from a police officer and was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he is currently in stable condition.
The Ghana FA is expected to launch an immediate probe into the matter that could lead to serious repercussions for all guilty parties.
