Majeed Ashmeru’s football dream could have ended at an infant stage if his mother had not been supportive following a decision from his father not to play football.
Red Bull Salzburg midfielder has revealed how his father nearly forced him to truncate his dream of becoming a footballer insisting “my father never wanted me to play football.”
The creative midfielder whose rise to the top has been stupendous disclosed how his choice of career nearly divided his home but was happy his parents settled to allow him to play.
“It was a bit difficult for me playing football because my father wasn’t in support of my choice to play football. But my mother was. So it was a divided house,” he revealed.
Despite his aggressive view of not allowing Ashmeru to play football, the Black Meteors midfielder claims his dad is proud of him now.
“But I think he is proud of me now than my mother,” he noted.
The dad who was at the Accra Sports Stadium to watch Majeed during Ghana’s clash with Algeria in the U23 AFCON Qualifier has suddenly turned a fan of his son and follows him to watch his games when he’s on national assignment.
The youngster still reveal how surprised he was to see his mother bent on seeing him realize his dream of playing football despite being a woman.
“I didn’t know why my mother supported me 100% to play football but my father wasn’t,” he noted.
“But later they agreed for me to play,” he said cheerfully.
It remains strange why many players have narrated similar experiences with their fathers while their mothers have always offered them the needed support.
Several Ghanaian footballers including Sammy Kuffour, Asamoah Gyan and Michael Essien have all had resistance from their dads against their decision to play football but they remain some of the most successful footballers in the country’s history.
