All is set for the commencement of the first ever Western Region Invitational Soccer Tournament, after it was duly launched by the LOC on Monday.
The competition has been birthed successfully due to the collaborative efforts of the Western Regional Coordinating Council, the Western Regional Sports Committee and the Western Regional Football Association, with the endorsement of the Regional Minister, Hon Kobby Okyere Darko Mensah.
The pre-season tournament is engineered at reviving the local game in the region, and will draw participation from 8 professional clubs hailing from the region comprising Medeama SC and Karela United FC.
The 2 elite league clubs are joined by second tier sides Nzema Kotoko FC, Sekondi Hasaacas FC, Samartex FC, Proud United and Skyy FC.
Division 2 outfit Sekondi Eleven Wise completes the list with the tournament slated for September 13 and a climax date of September 22.
The teams have been grouped into 2 with each group housing 4 teams. Group A contains Karela United, Sekondi Hasaacas, Eleven Wise and Skyy FC with Medeama SC, Proud United FC and Samartex FC wrapping up Group B.
In what will be played as a round robin styled tournament, Group A will have the Sekondi Sports Stadium as a host venue while the Samartex Park at Samreboi will host games in Group B.
The top 2 teams from each group will advance to the semi finals with eventual winners facing off in the grand finale for the diadem plus the prize money (though figure remains unknown as things stand).
Organisers have also revelead that each participating team will be given ₵5000 for starters plus cost of transportation and accommodation for travelling teams will also be catered for.
