Asamoah Gyan believes Andre Ayew erred in his decision to accept Black Stars captaincy ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Coach Kwesi Appiah on Friday, May 24 named Ayew as the new captain, replacing Gyan, who has been the skipper since 2013 when he succeeded John Mensah.
The decision caused the Kayserispor forward to announce his shock retirement from the national team only to make a U-turn barely 24hrs later after the intervention of President Akufo-Addo.
Both Gyan and Andre have consistently brushed aside claims of a power struggle in the team, but this latest development suggest an obvious division in camp.
It is widely believed that the tension between the two players derailed the country’s chances of ending a 37-year wait for an African title.
”I won’t blame him that much but I think he should have rejected the offer. When you are being given something that is shrouded in a lot of trouble and controversy, it’ll only be wise that you don’t go for it” Gyan said in an explosive interview on Asempa FM.
