Former Black Satellites defender Bright Addae believes the captaincy row will affect Ghana’s chances of winning the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Coach Kwesi Appiah on Friday, May 24 named Andre Ayew as the new captain, replacing Asamoah Gyan, who has been the skipper since 2013 when he succeeded John Mensah.
The decision caused Gyan to announce his shock retirement from the national team only to make a U-turn barely 24hrs later after the intervention of President Akufo-Addo.
“They can’t win the AFCON with this confusion in camp. If you want to win a cup for the nation, the team should be united.” Addae said.
Addae, who plays in the Italian Serie B added that, Gyan’s return to the team would be helpful.
“Gyan’s come back to the Black Stars can be helpful with his experience and can also motivate the players” he said.
Both Gyan and Andre have consistently brushed aside claims of a power struggle in the team, but this latest development is likely to cause massive division in camp.
It’s widely feared the tension between the two players could derail the team’s chances of ending a 37-year wait for an African title.
