Tamale City justified why they are the best division one side currently in Zone 1A in the ongoing Normalization Committee Special Competition, after edging Wa Suntaa FC in the top of the table clash at the Aliu Mahama Stadium.
The Citizens went into the encounter knowing a win will put them in the driving seat and a place in the round of 32 of the competition.
Two quick goals from former Tema Youth Skipper, Ekow Benson and Kwame Frimpong in the 5th and 18th minutes respectively condemned the Wa-based side to their third defeat of the campaign.
Caretaker coach Hamza Mohammed made four changes to the side that lost 2-1 to Kintampo FC in midweek and it paid off after Kwajo Poku was brought down in the penalty area of Suntaa, after a quick counter attack.
Ekow Benson stepped forward and nicely converted to break the deadlock in the 5th minute.
Frimpong however made sure of the three points when he tapped in a rebound after a scuffle in the goal area.
Though Suntaa came back stronger in the second half and getting a consolation 12 minutes to full time, Tamale City held on the their lead to jump to the summit of the Zone going into the last games of the competition.
Hamza Mohammed’s side is on 23 points, one ahead of second place Suntaa FC and four further points ahead of Steadfast in fourth place.
City will engage local rivals Gbewaa Fc on Sunday hoping the maintain their lead at the Zone 1A table.
