A fabulous second half performance at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium saw Asante Kotoko beat Medeama SC by 2-0 to go on top of the Zone A of the Normalization Committee Special Competition.
Two second half goals from Songne Yacouba and Abdul Fatawu Safiu secured a hard fought victory for the Porcupines.
C K Akonnor maintained the same team that started against Eleven Wonders in midweek.
Whiles Samuel Boadu also kept faith in the team that featured in their last game.
Fatawu Safiu came close to breaking the deadlock of the game in the second minute of the game but stopper Yaw Ansah did well to prevent him from scoring.
Tahiru Awudu came close for Medeama in the 11th minute, but Ganiyu Ismael did well to block his shot.
Jacob Appau and Tahiru Awudu combined beautifully in the penalty box to pull a surpise but Felix Annan acted quickly to save the danger.
The game was a well balanced game as both sides remained resolute at the back.
Obed Owusu sustained an injury in 43rd minute and was replaced by Songne Yacouba.
With three minutes of additional time, none of the sides was able to break the deadlock as the first half.
Asante Kotoko finally got the breakthrough through Songne Yacouba who found Safiu’s cross and calmly slotted home the opener.
Agyenim Boateng nearly drew Medeama level, but Felix Annan produced a monstrous save to deny him.
Tahiru Awudu missed a golden chance in 81st for Medeama after he was put through on goal by Rashid Nortey, but his shot missed the post by inch.
Medeama huffed and puffed but couldn’t break the resilient Kotoko defence.
Safiu Abdul Fatawu put the game beyond the reach of the visitors with a wonderful finish after he was put on goal by Songne Yacouba from a counter.
Despite playing four minutes of additional time Medeama SC couldn’t get a consolation as the referee blew his whistle for the end of the game.
