The Ghanaian game is generally centred in midfield and over the years, the country has produced some great midfielders such as Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari and others who have gone on to make it big at the World Stage.
With the AFCON 2019 approaching, one department of the game which Ghana stands tall is in midfield where we have great talents in abundance. Sports writer Edmund Okai Gyimah brings you the statistics of Ghana’s best midfielders in Europe this season.
*Thomas Partey (Central Midfielder Atletico Madrid) 31 League Games, 3 goals and 4 assists.
Partey is already in Egypt baring any last minute injury, the Atletico Madrid central midfielder has been a revelation for the Rojiblancos this season. He is the engine of Diego Simeone’s team and has always also delivered for the Black Stars. He is a sure bet.
Other Positions-Second Striker, Defensive Midfielder, Right-back
*Alfred Duncan(Central Midfielder Sassuolo) 24 League Games, 4 goals and 4 assists
Duncan is already a “wanted” man, the ambidextrous midfielder is having an impressive season in the Serie A and is a summer transfer target of AC Milan. The former Inter Milan player has been in and out of the Black Stars since making his debut in 2012
Other Position-Defensive Midfielder.
*Wakaso Mubarak (Central Midfielder Deportivo Alaves 28 League Games, 0 goal, 1 assist)
Just like Thomas Partey, Wakaso is also Egypt bound. He has given it all every time he wears the Black Stars jersey and he has been our best midfielder for the past four years.
Other Positions: Deep-lying playmaker, Left winger, left back.
*Obeng Regan (Central Midfielder NK Istra, 28 League games, 4 goals, 1 assist)
Originally owned by Spanish La Liga side Deportivo Alaves, Regan was sent on loan to Croatian Premier League NK Istra (same owners)when they bought him from FK Cukaricki last season. The left-footed midfielder has been by far Istra’s best player this season and is set to return to Deportivo Alaves.
Other Positions-Deep-lying playmaker, left winger, offensive midfielder.
*Majeed Ashimeru (Central Midfielder St. Gallen, 31 league games, 3 goals and 8 assists)
Call him the assists king, Ashimeru who is on loan from Austrian outfit Red Bulls Salzburg has been tremendous this season, he has raked in 8 assists so far in the Swiss League and Red Bull want him to return to their fold this summer.
Other Position-Attacking midfield.
*Raman Chibsah (Central midfielder Frosinone 32 League games, 1 goal, 0 assist)
Chibsah has been ever present in the Frosinone team but offers little both in his position as compared to the other players in that role looking for a place in the Black Stars. 31 League games and 1 goal with no assist as your team have also been relegated is not encouraging.
Other Position-Defensive midfield
*Afriyie Acquah(Central midfielder Empoli, 26 League games, 1 goal 0 assist)
One of the players who needs no introduction, whether as a central midfielder or defensive midfielder he has excelled in the Black Stars, he might not have had a good season but he is one player with a lion-heart who can step to the occasion any time.
Other position-Defensive midfield
