Asante Kotoko legend Ibrahim Sunday has backed coach C.K Akunnor to restore the club back to it’s glory days in Africa.
The Porcupine Warriors have not won a continental trophy in 36 years.
The Ghana Premier League giants reached the group stages of the 2018/2019 CAF Confederation Cup for the first time in eleven years but crashed out after losing 2:1 to Zesco United in the final group game in Ndola.
Akunnor came under heavy criticism after failing to secure quarterfinals berth with some even calling for his resignation.
However, coach Ibrahim Sunday, the man who guided Kotoko to their last trophy in Africa in 1983 insists the club can only improve by getting hold of the backroom staff and the core players.
“I think C.K Akunnor should remain at the club and work with the players. He came to Kotoko and had less than three months to prepare for the Confederation Cup campaign and Secondly he had new players coming in that he had to groom which is not easy. The team should stay together for another season, if that happens, I believe they can go further next time around” he told Footballmadeinghana.com
“I still love Asante Kotoko so much and I get affected anytime they lose. The team has lacked matured players for sometime now. But I hope in 3-4 years they will be able to win a title in Africa again. But at the moment it is very difficult” he concluded.
Meanwhile, C.K Akunnor’s men are off to a flying start as they aim is to win the ongoing Special Competition in order to represent the nation in Africa again.
Kotoko currently occupies the first position in the Northern Zone with 11 points followed closely by AshantiGold with 10 points.
