Ghanaian side Berekum Chelsea secured a historic qualification to the Viareggio Cup Tournament ongoing in Italy after winning a marathon penalty shootout against Athletico Paranaense U19.
A 16th minute strike by Jonah Attuquaye was cancelled in the 53rd minute by David sending the game into straight penalty shootouts.
Berekum Chelsea converted 7 of their kicks with Athletico Paranaense scoring 6 to see the Ghanaian side progressing to the next stage of the competition.
The qualification makes Berekum Chelsea the first African side to reach the quarter-final of the prestigious Viareggio Youth Cup on Tuesday afternoon.
With Tuesday’s win, they also become the first African side to reach the last eight of the tournament as they vie for the title of the tournament highly regarded in Italy.
Some of the country’s top clubs play in it and has been used as the venue to churn out the next generation of players.
Stephen Appiah previously played in the competition when he started his career with Udinese.
The performance of the Berekum side has attracted interest from several agents in Italy.
