Three players from Kumasi Asante Kotoko namely skipper Amos Frimpong, Goalkeeper Felix Annan and holding midfielder Kwame Bonsu have been given a call up by Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah ahead of this month’s 2019 AFCON qualifier against Kenya at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The trio have been in fine form for the Porcupine Warriors in the their CAF Confederations Cup campaign and their exploits have been noticed by the Black Stars technical handlers.
Amos Frimpong will have to justify himself in the team if he gets the chance to play as the right-back position is up for grabs with incumbent Harrison Afful getting to the twilight of his career whilst Andy Yiadom has not had it easy with struggling Reading in the English Championship.
Currently, with Kwesi Appiah opting to play Thomas Partey in a more offensive role, the only natural ball winner in the team is Afriyie Acquah and considering the impeccable form of Bonsu which has made him the engine of the Kotoko team, he could effectively cement his position for the AFCON through this Kenya game.
As Black Stars deputy coach Maxwell Konadu stated, they have been monitoring Felix Annan for some months now and there is no doubt that he is the best in the country. Considering the fine form of Annan, he could be put in between the sticks against Kenya for his first major test and the technical handlers seek to get all the three goalkeepers they have in mind well equipped for the tournament.
Ghana has already qualified for the 2019 AFCON and this game is for the players to redeem their image after suffering a 1-0 defeat in the hands of Kenya last year.
The game which is slated for March 23, 2019 will also give the new players a chance to prove themselves.
