The impending commissioning of the Tafo Sahara Park could be marred before its actual launch following an attempt by some Concerned Youth of Tafo to hit the streets in protest against the quality of the facility.
The facility which was established by the government of Ghana through the Ministry of Zongo and Inner Cities Development is being heavily contested by the youth who claim the quality has been compromised.
According to the leader of the group, Kwadwo Dabankah, the state of the facility is still poor for the government to commission it for the community to struggle with it.
He argues that, almost all regions with the same facility through the Ministry of Zongo and Inner Cities Development, were given artificial turfs and wonders why Tafo was given a natural pitch which is even in a poor state.
“We are demonstrating to stop them from commissioning because the facility is poor. The pitch is not in a good state and it’s not fenced. If they want to go ahead and commission without considering our concerns, we will stop them,” he said.
“Everywhere such a facility is found, it’s an AstroTurf. So why give Tafo a natural pitch which is even bad. The grass is poorly planted and it’s not well kept.
“Our major concern is that we will not allow the contractor to commission the facility and take tax payers’ money when in actual fact he’s done nothing. He must be paid for doing a good job and not a shoddy one,” he added.
The Sahara Park, located in the premises of the Tafo Methodist School at Mile 3, was inspected by the Zongo Minister Mustapha Hamid who angrily insisted the contractor must regrass the pitch and put in place.
Despite the call of the Minister, it appears the contractor paid death ears and went ahead with his work.
With authorities yet to respond to the calls of the youth, it looks likely the commissioning could be marred by chaos on Friday if measures are not taken to prevent any such occurrence.
