The former Inter Allies attacker joined the Porcupine Warriors from Techiman Eleven Wonders towards the end of last year and so far Abdul Fatawu Safiu is the owner of two goals and one assist in three appearances.
But don’t make mistakes. His start in Kumasi was not good. The former Portland Timbers forward failed to impress C.K Akonnor during the club’s training tour in Takoradi and failed to make the 18-man player list for the Kariobangi Sharks trip in December.
But after a favorable 0-0 draw in the away leg of that tie, Akonnor needed to win at home and it was Fatawu that he resorted to as his trump card. The client of Yusif Chipsah was handed a surprise start in Kumasi against the Kenyans and the outcome was a big performance and a brilliant goal helping his side clinch a 2-1 win to advance.
Against Coton Sport de Garoua in Yaounde, it was Fatawu’s 50th minute goal that put Kotoko 3-1 ahead. The home side scored again but 3-2 would be the final scoreline in favor of the Ghanaian side. In that match, he also grabbed an assist helping Emmanuel Gyamfi to open the scoring in the 8th.
The competition in the attacking department of the club is really huge. There are Songne Yacouba, Obed Owusu, Frederick Boateng, Naby Keita but Fatawu has established himself as an important player in Akonnor’s first team.
However the bigger challenge is ahead when the Confederation Cup group play commences in the first week of February and the Ghanaian striker will be one of the decisive players for C.K Akonnor to count on.
