Former Black Stars skipper CK Akonnor has made history by becoming the 4th Asante Kotoko coach to reach the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup with the club in fifteen years, and the first coach to reach the group stage in eleven years.
The young but experienced coach achieved the feat after securing a 5-3 aggregate score line over Cameroonian side Coton Sport Garoua in the playoff phase of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday after a 2-1 score line at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The former Ghana skipper and swift winger had earlier guided the side to register a 3-2 score line in Yaoundé a week ago.
Akonnor’ achievement which is the club’s fourth since 2004 has been applauded by many as the task has not been achieved by several coaches after their last group stage appearance in 2008.
German trainer Hans Dieter Schmidt qualified the side into the CAF Confederation Cup in 2004, went to the group stage and even qualified for the final but lost to rivals Accra Hearts of Oak through the lottery of penalty shootouts.
Late Coach Afrane guided the side two years later to make it to the group stage but failed to make it to the final before Bashiru Hayford grabbed the third feat in 2008.
The Porcupine Warriors have since struggled to record such an achievement for the past eleven years until CK Akonnor’ feat on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors will be anxiously waiting for the group stage draw on Monday morning to know their group opponents for the next phase of the competition.
