All four Ghana Premier League clubs want the maiden edition of the Betway Cup scheduled for this weekend postponed over Asante Kotoko solidarity, top club officials have told FootballMadeinGhana.com.
Ghana Premier League Champions Aduana Stars as well as AshantiGold, Medeama and Liberty Professionals are expected to take part in the two-day tournament at the Len Clay stadium in Obuasi on Saturday and Sunday.
However, the clubs appear to be backtracking on going ahead with the tournament this weekend in massive solidarity with giants Kotoko who take on Cameroonian side Coton Sport Garoua in the reverse fixture of the CAF Confederation Cup in Kumasi in Sunday.
It’s widely feared the hugely anticipated clash will take the shine off the tournament in Obuasi with clubs seeking a postponement.
It’s unclear if title sponsors Betway will budge to their demands, but sources say the clubs have concerns about the timing of the tournament.
Top officials of the four clubs have told FootballmadeinGhana they would welcome a postponement of the tournament scheduled for this weekend.
The draw for the competition took place at the Betway office in Accra on Wednesday.
Liberty Professionals have drawn host AshantiGold in the opening fixture while Medeama battle Aduana Stars in the second match.
Winners of the two encounters will battle each other for the ultimate on Sunday at the same venue.
The Betway Cup is a club football competition organized for clubs which are sponsored by the online betting firm Betway.
