The Ghana FA have revealed a feature of the upcoming Special Competition to have teams engage each other in penalty shootouts where games end in a draw.
This according to President of the Normalisation Committee Dr. Kofi Amoah, is to help improve the art of penalty taking amongst players.
The shootout in the Special Competition shall however have no bearing on the result of the match played.
Special rewards will however be handed out to victorious teams.
Ghana has often suffered in major football competitions through the lottery of the penalty shootout.
Competitions that readily come into mind is the 2010 World Cup and 2012 Africa Cup of Nations were the Black Stars on both occasions exited through penalties against Uruguay and Zambia respectively.
The Ghana U17 Women’s team also recently suffered from the penalty voodoo as they fell to Mexico at the Quarter final stage.
This situation is very similar at club level where Asante Kotoko’s inexplicable misses from the spot in their CAF Confederation Cup match against CARA.
The Special Competition will is to be contested by 64 clubs across the Premier League and Division One leagues.
