The 21-year old striker has scored 8 goals and has created two more goals for Sparta Praque in the Czech Republic top-flight league this season and his team are third on the standings after Week 14 but Kwesi Appiah consistently snubs the striking sensation.
What makes his non-selection scandalous is the fact that the talented youngster has scored four times, more goals this season than all four strikers the Black Stars gaffer has assembled for the AFCON qualifier against Ethiopia.
Asamoah Gyan, Majeed Waris, Jordan Ayew and Emmanuel Boateng have scored justĀ 2 goals and have provided 4 assists combined in 33 appearances for Kayserispor, Nantes, Crystal Palace and Levante this season. Tetteh alone has netted 8 times and has provided 2 assists.
The former Dreams FC and Standard Lierge prodigy is joint-second highest goalscorer in the Czech Republic elite league with 8 goals.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying Tetteh should go in at the expense of the captain Gyan or Jordan whose return to the national team is explained by not just footballing reasons but the delicate public perception of Kwesi Appiah’s vendetta against the Ayews.
But this is my point. That Waris, who has scored just once and assisted once in 13 appearances for his French club this season and is not a first team regular does not deserve a selection at the expense of Benjamin Tetteh or even John Antwi who is the owner of 4 goals for El Makasa in Egypt.
Waris continues to disappoint in his last Black Stars invitations but as usual, he is rewarded with consecutive call-ups by Kwesi Appiah, inexplicably.
Emmanuel Boateng scored a hat trick against Barcelona last season and yes, he was good but that was last season and he has to merit his call-up now. Boateng has scored zero goals in 8 appearances for his club Levante this term and he is a pale shadow of the player he was last season. He is not Asamoah Gyan to deserve a Black Stars call-up even when he is out of form.
When Raphael Dwamena failed to impress after coming on as a second-half substitute in the Kenya defeat after wasting a good scoring opportunity, Kwesi Appiah dropped him from the next selection.
Patrick Twumasi has not returned since his last time out with the team and so why is Tetteh not considered by Appiah?
Benjamin Tetteh is young, talented and has shown signs of greatness in Europe and his constant snub is indeed not proper.
Gariba.
