From now until the time that FIFA makes the official announcement of the members of the normalisation committee for the Ghana Football Association , probable names of potential members will start to be speculated.
The liaison team – appointed by FIFA and CAF – on July 4 has overseen the participation of the Black Princesses participation in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in France and two matches of Aduana Stars CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
But did the FIFA/CAF liaison team of Dr. Kofi Amoah and Mr. Francis Oti Akenteng alongside their spokesperson Dan Kwaku Yeboah perform creditably well in order to make a claim on the FIFA normalization committee?
The Kofi Amoah-led liaison team was strongly criticized that they tried to veer into areas their mandate did not cover and that constituted ignorance and poor judgment according to many critics. For instance the liaison team solicited for reform proposals from Ghanaian soccer clubs on the domestic league during a meeting in Accra last month. While some clubs responded, others did not.
Such club officials as Takyi Ahen of Techiman Eleven Wonders and Ameenu Shardow of Dreams FC all raised the issue and called for Amoah and Akenteng to solely focus on international competition as the FIFA announcement stated.
Per the outcome of Thursday meeting between government and FIFA in Zurich, it is rather a normalisation committee that is to be appointed to do what the liaison team had sought to do and this further exposes the team and raises more questions about its competence.
The FIFA normalisation committee is appointed in accordance with Article 8 of the FIFA Statutes which reads : “Executive bodies of member associations may under exceptional circumstances be removed from office by the Council in consultation with the relevant confederation and replaced by a normalisation committee for a specific period of time.”
This provision means all the members of the current Executive body of the GFA – regardless of how qualified, honest and eligible they are – cannot be part of the normalisation committee.
FIFA says it will conduct eligibility checks to select competent persons with integrity to form the interim committee to run football in the country but it remains to be seen whether Kofi Amoah and his friends will be considered.
