The 2018/19 season is the 61st edition of the Turkish Super Lig which is the top tier professional football league in the country and Ghana – four time African champions – has its record goalscorer of all-time playing in Turkey as well as four others.
The Turkish association is ranked 10th best in Europe by UEFA making the country’s top league one of the respectable destinations for players from continents like South America and Africa.
First of all there is Ghana’s highest goalscorer Asamoah Gyan – 51 goals – on the team of Kayserispor Kulubu for which he scored 4 times in 14 appearances last season but the 32-year old was left on the bench during the team’s first league match of the current season against Antalyaspor on August 13, a game they won by 2-0.
Whilst Gyan watched from the substitute bench his teammate and fellow Ghana international Bernard Mensah started and played 90 minutes for Kayserispor as he seeks to impress on his loan transfer from Atletico Madrid.
At Fenerhace is Andre Ayew who packed his things, left Swansea City and landed in Turkey to continue his trade on a season-long loan deal. The son of legend Abedi Pele has already played some games for his Turkish side as they got eliminated by Celtic in the third qualifying round of the UEFA champions league. However Andre will be looking for big things in the full head season ahead.
Moreover there is Joseph Attaman Laweh at Istanbul Basaksehir who won their first game of the season against Trabzonspor but the former Tema Youth player remained an unused substitute. Laweh has been with them since 2016.
The fifth Ghanaian Super Lig player is the 24-year old defensive midfielder Isaac Sackey who plays regular football at Alanyaspor and already started the opening game this season in their 1-0 away defeat at Sivasspor. Sackey earned his first Black Stars selection in the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifying game against Ethiopia in June 2017.
