If Ghanaian players who have won an European trophy were to be called Ghana’s record all-time goalscorer Asamoah Gyan would not be able to step forward but Thomas Partey will.
There is no denying the fact that Gyan is a successful football player. Africa’s top goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup. Ghana’s all-time goalscorer. In terms of revenue he is one of the top African players to have generated substantial amount of money playing the game . He has it all but one thing Gyan lacks is success with European clubs.
Gyan represented four European clubs namely Udinese, Modena, Rennes and Sunderland between 2003 and 2011 and won zero domestic and European trophies during this long spell of trade on the continent and it doesn’t look like he will achieve that in Turkey at the moment.
Whilst many people admit that it is realistically very difficult to win trophies with such clubs like Modena, Rennes, Sunderland in highly competitive leagues like the Serie A, French Ligue 1 and the English Premier League the fact still remains that despite his big name Gyan has no trophies to show in Europe even though he found that success in the Gulf with Al Ain.
However Thomas Partey has now won two European titles with Atletico Madrid as a key part of the Atletico formation within a year. The Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup all landed in 2018.
The 25-year old was an integral part of Diego Someone’s team that lifted the Europa trophy earlier this year beating Olympique Marseille in the final match.
On Wednesday evening the versatile midfielder added the UEFA Super Cup onto his list of honors won with the Rojiblancos. It gets better and better.
This means Partey has now won more European honors (2) than likes of Michael Essien (1) and Sulley Muntari (1) even though he is yet to win the most important Champions league.
This has certainly been the Partey year.
