On Saturday afternoon the Black Satellites of Ghana experienced both the bad and the good in Cape Coast coming from a goal down to snatch a remarkable victory against Benin’s Junior Squirrels.
The game was the first leg of the qualification tie between Ghana and Benin for the 2019 CAF U-20 Cup of Nations.
But before the Satellites created their own goodness it was the visiting Benin side that made life hard for the Ghanaian side. Until after sixty minutes of soccer the scoreline read 1-0 in favor of Benin and hope started to hop out of many of the Ghanaian fans watching the game but as we worried the saviors arrived.
It was not as if they came off the bench to save the day. They were right there from the start of the game but it was the moment of salvation that delayed and for an hour of compact football Valere Houandinho, figuratively, started to perhaps think of a hero’s welcome at the Cotonou airport for winning a game on the soil of a great African football nation as he continued to instruct and correct his charges from the technical area at the Cape Coast stadium.
But cometh the hour cometh the men. Richard Danso in the 60th, Ishahaku Konda in the 72nd and Danso again six minutes from time scored to convert discomfort into comfort as Ghana won 3-1.
Even though Danso struggled at the beginning he completed the most important task for a striker hitting a fantastic brace to help his team win and as for the captain Konda he did what captains do.
Danke! Danso and Konda.
