The Black Satellites of Ghana came from a goal down to beat their Benin opponents by a scoreline of 3-1 in Cape Coast on Saturday but how the game started and ended means nothing is decided yet.
There is still lot to expect in the next 90 minutes of the return fixture to take place in a week’s time in Cotonou even though the qualification compass points towards the Black Satellites the more.
Ghana and Benin contest for the last qualification berth to join host nation Niger and seven other qualified teams for the CAF U-20 tournament finals next year.
Immediately after the game coach Valere Houandinou started to give a positive message to the people of Benin ahead of the second leg.
“I think we were a bit scared of the name Ghana but we saw that we can play and qualify. It was a good match and I am confident that we can go back and do better” Houandinou said.
The visitors took the lead in the 28th minute of the first half through Allagbani Saliou and held onto it at half time but the resilient Benin side started to meltdown from the hour mark with Ghana equalizing, taking the lead and sealing the victory in the 60th, 72nd and 84th minute respectively.
However it should not be forgotten that Benin produced a similar come back against Gambia before reaching this stage where they produce a solid performance to win 2-0 at home after losing the away leg 2-1.
While Satellites have a better quality and a bigger pedigree than Gambia, the Beninois have shown that they are capable of producing upsets at least as they demonstrated versus The Gambia and so Richard Danso and his teammates must watch out.
Blowing away a two-goal advantage to fail to go to Niger 2019 would certainly be a bad record Jimmy Cobblah and his boys would not be proud of.
