Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Real Madrid were awarded the Club of the 20th century honor by International Federation for Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) for the continents of Africa and Europe respectively.
But supporters chief of the Ghanaian club Kwaku Amponsah says despite this honor people should stop putting the Kumasi-based side in the same bracket when the likes of Real Madrid are mentioned.
Amponsah was expressing his unhappiness about the current incidents at the club as a group of Kotoko players led by former goalkeeper Isaac Amoako has petitioned the club management and the Manhyia Palace regarding the lack of proper accountability of the financial donations the club received from sympathizers following the July 2017 road accident that claimed the life of their equipment officer Obeng Asare.
“It’s is a big joke when I hear people compare Kotoko to Real Madrid.” Kwaku Amponsah said on Metro FM.
“When I hear them say Kotoko is like Madrid I laugh off. Lets be serious. This is funny to say the least. This is Kotoko that had their team bus not covered by any insurance package for about one year and you tell me it is as big as Real Madrid in Africa. Come on” the National Circles chairman fumed.
It is to be stated that relationship between the Circles leadership and the club management has deteriorated ever since Mr. Kwame Kyei refused to sanction a sponsorship deal between the Kotoko supporters association and an alcoholic beverage producer.
“I mean look at the way the club is managed. There are problems everywhere and everyday. It’s just that people don’t appreciate the truth.” he lamented.
Amponsah’s outburst is likely to fuel tension at the club especially when the team is planning to travel to Tanzania for an international friendly against Simba SC next week.
