Ex Ghana captain Stephen Appiah says African teams must do well to merit more slots at the World Cup.

All five African teams at the 2018 FIFA World Cup exited after the group stage.

This is in sharp contrast with that of teams from South America and even Europe who have the largest number of teams at the World Cup.

Discussions are now rife as to whether Africa deserves to have more teams at the World Cup especially with FIFA’s plans of expanding the tournament on the horizon.

And Appiah who captain Ghana at the 2006 World Cup feels teams representing the continent must make a strong case for more slots through improved performance.

“We are asking for more slots but from the way we’ve performed I think it will be very difficult,” he said.

Senegal, Nigeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt were the five teams that represented Africa at the 2018 World Cup.

All of them however exited the competition after just the group stage.
