Deputy Sports Minister Pius Hadzide has called on CAF to re-examine the MRI reports of the Mali team over the doubts of their real ages following their historic triumph over Ghana at the Africa U17 Championships.
The Malians beat the Black Starlets 1-0 in the finals on Sunday to retain the trophy they won two years ago in Niger.
Ghana who started the competition scoring a plethora of goals in a unique attacking brand of football couldn’t match up physically with the Malians in the finals.
The mostly diminutive stature of the Ghanaian players fell way short to their final opponent, stifling the attacking threat of Paa Kwesi Fabin’s team.
Ghana’s Deputy Sports Minister Pius Hadzide who watched the final in the stands in Libreville doubts the real ages of the Malian team and has called on CAF to launch investigations.
“It was clearly a David and Goliath battle,” he said.
“We need to investigate the ages of the Malians.
“I shook the hands of one of the players and I felt that can’t be an under 17 player.
“I have doubts in my mind over their ages and that is why I am calling for further investigations.”
It is however unclear at this point whether the Ghana FA will launch an official protest to CAF to trigger such investigations.
Mali could be stripped of the title if found guilty of age-cheating with Ghana the waiting beneficiary of such a decision.
